Poverty, media & stereotypes

Description

This bachelor thesis, titled “Poverty, Media and Stereotypes – An Analysis of the Gender-Stereotypical Representation of Poverty on Austrian Television Based on Lothar Mikos’ Film and Television Analysis,” delves into one of the most pressing questions of modern media: How truthfully does television portray poverty—and how deeply are these portrayals shaped by gender stereotypes?

To uncover these dynamics, a solid theoretical foundation was established, followed by an in-depth analysis of a television report on unemployed families and intergenerational poverty. Guided by Lothar Mikos’ analytical model, the study dissects the elements of content and representation, narration and dramaturgy, and characters and actors to reveal the mechanisms behind media storytelling.

In the context of this research, particular attention is given to content and representation, as it exposes how subtle yet powerful stereotypes influence public perception. The findings reveal that the examined report indeed reinforces gender-stereotypical imagery—demonstrating how the media, often unconsciously, continues to shape the face of poverty through a gendered lens.
